Who is a candidate?
Most patients are very pleased with the results of their refractive
surgery. However, like any other medical procedure, there are risks involved.
That's why it is important for you to understand the limitations and possible
complications of refractive surgery.
In order to asses whether your refractive error qualifies for this type
of correction, it is important to obtain your complete medical history
and to have a detailed eye exam performed by the ophthalmologist.
In general:
- Your refractive error should be stable for at least one year.
- You should be at least 18 years old.
- You should have no ophthalmologic disorders (such as cataract or glaucoma).
- You should be free of certain general illnesses (such as rheumatic
arthritis) as they may interfere with the healing process.
- You should not be taking any medication which may have an effect on
the healing process of the cornea.
- You should not be pregnant or breastfeeding.
- If you suffer from seasonal allergies, surgery should be scheduled
at an allergy-free time.
