Expert care for difficult cases
Correction of complex vision disorders
Because our surgeons offer the entire spectrum of modern eye surgery,
they are able to help patients with complex vision disorders.
Extreme Nearsightedness or Farsightedness
For patients with extreme refractive errors (nearsightedness starting
at - 10 dpt., farsightedness starting at + 3 dpt.) the LASIK procedure
is not indicated. In these cases, lens
implants or lens
replacement surgery provide an alternative. A combination of lens
implant and LASIK, called Bioptics,
is also offered.
In cases of extreme refractive errors with an astigmatic component, a
sphero-toric lens implant
is offered. This lens is only available at very few, highly specialized,
clinics in Germany.
Severe Congenital and Irregular Astigmatism
In cases of severe astigmatism, starting at 6 dpt., our surgeons can perform
an astigmatic keratotomy.
Sometimes, irregular astigmatism can be also treated with the LASIK procedure.
Severe and/or Irregular Astigmatisms after Eye Surgery
Following a corneal transplant, many patients complain of a severe and
irregular astigmatism. In this case, the LASIK
procedure has been used successfully to reduce this effect or to eliminate
it altogether.
Treatment of Complications after Eye Surgery
Many patients from all over the world have contacted the ALZ eye clinic
for treatment after undergoing unsatisfactory eye surgery elsewhere.
Keratoconus
For patients with keratoconus, the cornea gets thinner and thinner, which
results in a higher grade of astigmatism. Surgeons at the ALZ eye clinic
participated in a European study to use corneal
implants to stabilize and improve astigmatism.
Functional Vision Impairment in One Eye (Amblyopia)
Many patients who are amblyopic have developed this condition as a result
of being cross-eyed since childhood. In cases of amblyopia, the vision
of the impaired eye may be optimized to some extent by using the applicable
procedure (LASIK or ICL), but a complete correction (20/20 vision) should
not be expected.
Corneal Scars and Recidivous Erosions
The PTK, phototherapeutic keratectomy, is the therapeutic application
of PRK. Using PTK,
corneal scars or opaqueness on the surface of the cornea can be removed
successfully. PTK has also proven highly efficient for the treatment of
recidivous (recurrent) erosions of the corneal epithelium
