Is it possible to have LASIK surgery after corneal surgery
or if scarring on the cornea is present?
It is possible to greatly correct an astigmatism resulting from a corneal
transplant (keratoplasty) with the LASIK procedure. Corneal scars may
also be removed with a laser treatment. This is referred to as PTK (phototherapeutic
keratectomy). PTK has also proven to be highly efficient for the treatment
of recidivous (recurrent) erosions of the corneal epithelium.
Can LASIK be used in case of an existing keratoconus
or other ophthalmologic disorders?
In case of a keratoconus a LASIK procedure is not possible because
it would make the already thinned cornea even thinner. However, if you
have a keratoconus it is possible to implant synthetic rings (ICRs) into
the cornea. A detailed eye exam will determine whether this treatment
alternative may be applicable in your case.
In case of an existing nystagmus (oscillation of the eye), LASIK surgery
is not recommended.
Generally, LASIK surgery should only performed on a healthy eye. Any existing
ophthalmologic disorder should be treated prior to surgery. Based on a
detailed preoperative eye exam, your surgeon can tell you whether or not
a LASIK procedure can be recommended without concerns.
Can strabismus (crossed eye) be corrected with
laser surgery? Amblyopia (poor vision) may be optimized to some
extent but not cured with an adequate surgical procedure (LASIK or also
ICL). It should not be expected that full vision (100 %) is regained.
