Bioptics = LASIK + Phakic Lens Implant

ICLs alone do not produce good quality vision in cases of extreme myopia and LASIK’s effectiveness diminishes as the ablation depth increases. So, for patients with extreme refractive errors, a combination of both techniques, called Bioptics, might be appropriate.

The lens implant can correct nearsightedness between -10 to -20 diopter.
The LASIK, performed in a second operation a few weeks later, can correct another -10 diopter as well as an accompanying astigmatism.

First procedure
Corneal flap preparation First, the corneal flap is prepared, but not lifted.

Lens implant During the same session, the lens is implanted.

Second procedure, approximately 3 months later
LASIK The flap, which was cut during the first procedure, is lifted.

LASIK

Now, the excimer laser is used to modulate the cornea to correct the refractive error.
