Refractive Surgery: The surgical Correction of Refractive Errors
Surgical correction of refractive errors can eliminate the need for eye
glasses or contact lenses. For the vast majority of patients suffering
from farsightedness or nearsightedness, with or without astigmatism, refractive
surgery offers a good alternative.
Besides Femto-LASIK, we offer a variety
of procedures, including those meant to treat complicated or extreme refractive
errors.

Traditional LASIK
The traditional LASIK procedure is the combination of a
surgical incision technique (keratomileusis) to open a flap in the
cornea and the application of an excimer (cool) laser to remove
a small amount of corneal tissue. The amount of tissue removed is
dependent on the degree of correction necessary to restore natural
vision. The microkeratome (blade) used to make the incision as well
as the excimer laser are computer-guided and precise instruments.

Photoablative Refractive Keratectomy (PRK),
Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis (LASEK), or
Epi-LASIK
Since 1989, PRK has been used to correct mild to moderate nearsightedness,
farsightedness, and/or astigmatism. During PRK, a surgeon uses the
computer-controlled excimer laser to reshape the cornea. This laser,
which delivers a cool pulsing beam of ultraviolet light, is used on
the surface of the cornea, not underneath the cornea, like in LASIK
laser eye surgery. Therefore, no cutting is required. The central
corneal surface regenerates within approximately 3 to 4 days. LASEK
and Epi-LASIK are relatively new variations of PRK and LASIK. More... |

Phakic lens implants: Acrysof, Verisyse, Visian lenses
Phakic lenses are synthetic lens which are implanted into the eye in addition to the natural lens to
correct extreme nearsightedness or farsightedness. More... |

Refractive lens exchange
Lens exchange is a corrective eye surgery used in cases of extreme
refractive errors. In this procedure, the eye's own natural lens is
removed and replaced with a synthetic lens. More... |

Bioptics
Bioptics is a combination of lens implants and LASIK. The implantation
of a phakic IOL artisan lens followed by a LASIK procedure a few weeks
later This combination procedure is used when either one wouldn't
be effective because of extreme refractive errors. More... |

Astigmatic Keratotomy (AK)
AK is a surgical procedure that attempts to reduce severe to extreme
astigmatism (resulting from an eye injury or corneal transplant) by
placing a small arch-shaped incision at the periphery of the cornea.

Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segments (ICRS)
ICRS is a fairly new refractive surgical procedure to correct myopia.
A microscopic ring or ring segment is implanted into the periphery
of the cornea – without touching the cornea. This flattens the
central corneal tissue and thereby allows for the correction of nearsightedness.
The “intacs” are removable and exchangeable and the procedure
is a minimally invasive outpatient service. More...
We also implant ICRS in eyes with keratoconus. More… |
